U.S. President Donald Trump says his Board of Peace has reached an agreement with Hamas and other Palestinian factions on a plan to disarm armed groups in Gaza.
Trump described the agreement as “a monumental step” toward peace and security and said it would be carried out in phases. Under the plan, Israeli forces would gradually withdraw as disarmament progresses, while an International Stabilisation Force and a new Palestinian police force would help secure Gaza.
“This agreement is a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work closely with the Board of Peace to help the Palestinian people,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
“At the same time, Israel will have the security it deserves,” he added.
Al Jazeera obtained a copy of the agreement, which says a detailed roadmap for disarmament must be prepared within 14 days.
The process would begin with the entry of a National Committee and the International Stabilisation Force into Gaza.
The National Committee would oversee the “inventory and storage” of weapons, while an international verification committee would monitor the process.
The agreement also links disarmament to the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
Ghazi Hamad, a member of Hamas’ negotiating delegation, said the talks were difficult but produced “the best possible formula that was achievable.”
He warned that Hamas would not implement the agreement if Israel failed to meet its obligations, including withdrawal from Gaza and progress on reconstruction.
Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s high representative for Gaza, said it “took months of very difficult negotiations” to reach the agreement.
There has been no immediate comment from Israel, while Palestinian Islamic Jihad said reports of an agreement were inaccurate and expressed reservations about the wording.
