The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has uncovered fresh production of banned sachet alcoholic drinks and small plastic bottles of alcohol, despite a federal government ban on the products.
Speaking at a media briefing, NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye said enforcement teams found some manufacturers still producing the banned drinks during recent operations in Lagos, Ogun and other states.
According to her, officers recovered banned 100-millilitre plastic bottles and packaging materials with production dates as recent as 23rd July 2026.
"These manufacturers were producing banned products this very month, just last week, even after the ban had taken full effect and after NAFDAC had already engaged them," Adeyeye said.
She said some companies moved production machines to unregistered locations and removed their signboards to avoid being detected by regulators.
Adeyeye explained that the ban on alcohol in sachets and plastic bottles smaller than 200 millilitres followed Senate resolutions passed in November 2025 and the National Alcohol Policy signed earlier this month.
She said the products are cheap, easily hidden and often sold where children and teenagers can buy them.
"The ban exists to protect Nigerians, especially our children, and NAFDAC has a duty to enforce it," she said.
"The ban is on small pack sizes, not on alcohol."
The NAFDAC boss also disclosed that enforcement officers came under attack during the operations.
"One of our officers was nearly stabbed," she said.
"Another officer was slapped and pushed, physically assaulted, while carrying out the work this agency sent him to do."
She vowed that the agency would continue its nationwide enforcement, warning that manufacturers, distributors, retailers and anyone who attacks NAFDAC officials would face the full weight of the law.
