The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted a large shipment of opioids hidden in a truck carrying building materials in Taraba State and arrested several suspected drug dealers across the country, including a 75-year-old man in Ebonyi State.

In a statement on Sunday, NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said operatives acted on intelligence and stopped a truck travelling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Jalingo, Taraba State.

A search of the vehicle uncovered “a massive drug stash concealed beneath the cargo,” leading to the arrest of 22-year-old Buhari Abdullahi.

Recovered from the truck were 320,840 capsules of tramadol, 600 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 4,500 rohypnol tablets and 299 bottles of codeine syrup.

In Ebonyi State, NDLEA officers arrested 75-year-old Okebe Samuel in Okposi with 300 grams of skunk.

Babafemi said the operation showed that “age is no barrier to the enforcement of the law.”

The agency also arrested suspected drug dealers in Imo, Edo, Kano and Gombe states.

In Imo, officers raided a drug hideout in Orlu and arrested 32-year-old Chioma Okeke with eight kilograms of skunk.

In Edo, three women and one man were arrested during raids in Benin City.

In Kano, officers recovered 38 kilograms of skunk from a 19-year-old suspect, Saifullahi Lawan, while a suspect in Gombe was caught with 15,000 capsules of tramadol.

NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, praised officers for their “resilience and vigilance” and said the agency remained committed to “dismantling drug supply chains” across Nigeria.
