Veteran Nigerian juju and highlife musician Iyun Janet Oluwatoyosi Ajilore, popularly known as St. Janet, has died after a brief illness, bringing an end to a career that made her one of the best-known live performers in Nigeria's party music scene.
The singer reportedly died on Saturday, while news of her passing was announced on Sunday by publisher and socialite Otunba Femi Davies through a social media post that has since drawn tributes from fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry.
Announcing her death, Davies wrote, "St Janet (Iyun Janet Ajilore), a popular Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician known for her vibrant live performances, energetic stage presence and socially unfiltered party tracks, is dead.
"She died after a brief illness on Saturday."
Known to many fans as "Mama Yabis," St. Janet built a loyal following through energetic stage performances that blended juju and highlife music with humour, satire and bold social commentary.
