The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC) says President Bola Tinubu remains committed to providing Nigerians with stable and reliable electricity despite ongoing challenges in the power sector.
The council's spokesperson, Dele Alake, said this in a statement on Sunday while responding to criticism of Tinubu's 2023 campaign promise to improve electricity supply and end estimated billing.
During a meeting with members of the Organised Private Sector in Lagos before the 2023 election, Tinubu promised Nigerians regular electricity and warned that they should not re-elect him if he failed to deliver.
However, he added that he should be allowed to explain his failure before seeking a second term.
Alake said critics had often left out that part of the president's promise, arguing that his performance should be assessed alongside the full statement.
“While fixing the power sector crisis remains unfinished, the President is working consistently to deliver on his promise to Nigerians, and his commitment to face the challenges head-on has never diminished,” he said.
The council listed the Electricity Act 2023, the Presidential Metering Initiative and efforts to settle more than ₦6 trillion in inherited power-sector debts among the administration's interventions.
It also said more than 1.5 million customers had received meters under the initiative in the last three years, while a ₦4 trillion bond programme was established to settle verified debts owed to power generation and gas companies.
The council maintained that fixing the electricity sector was ongoing work.
It added that Tinubu would present his achievements and outstanding challenges to Nigerians as he seeks re-election in 2027.
