The controversy over the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results has deepened after a West African Examinations Council official alleged irregularities and technical glitches in the release of the results.
Olanrewaju Fadehan, Head of Examinations at WAEC’s Anambra office, made the allegations in a viral video, saying candidates who took the computer-based examination were particularly affected.
Fadehan said the results were initially expected between 3rd and 5th of August, but last-minute adjustments were made before their release.
“Obviously, there was a problem because the press was eagerly waiting on Monday, the scheduled date.
"There was a need to quickly do some last-minute adjustments.
"Something was wrong,” he said.
He alleged that the adjustments affected candidates in subjects including Mathematics, English and Igbo.
He also questioned why some South-East candidates performed poorly in Igbo, despite the language being widely spoken in the region.
Fadehan said schools that invested heavily in CBT facilities were also affected.
“The call for a review this year is particularly disturbing, as it is alarming.
"Schools that subscribed to the CBT innovation of WAEC were badly hit. Some of them spent upwards of ₦60m and above to set up their CBT facilities,” he alleged.
He said he had petitioned the WAEC Board, the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examining Bodies and the education minister over the alleged problems.
Fadehan also called on President Bola Tinubu to investigate the results, particularly those of candidates who took the computer-based examination.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, declined to comment, saying, “No comment for now.”
