Nigeria's Consulate General in Johannesburg has condemned the killing of Nigerian citizen Ibeh Chika Simon during a South African police operation, describing the incident as another troubling case of violence against foreign nationals.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the consulate said Simon died "under questionable circumstances" during a South African Police Service operation on July 23 in Bellville, Cape Town.

It also said another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, was shot during the operation and is receiving treatment for severe injuries.

"We are deeply appalled by reports of the egregious police tactics that led to his death, as well as the shooting of another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, who remains under treatment with severe injuries," the consulate said.

The mission said the incident "highlights an alarming pattern of unresolved extrajudicial killings/deaths and unacceptable misconduct against foreign nationals."

It added: "We demand an immediate, transparent, and unsparing investigation by South African authorities.

"Perpetrators must be held accountable."

The consulate also stressed that while Nigerians in South Africa must obey the country's laws, "no alleged offense justifies execution-style enforcement or unacceptable operational techniques.

"Suspects are entitled to due process in a court of law."

The latest killing adds to a long list of Nigerians who have died during xenophobic attacks or violent incidents in South Africa over the years.

Several Nigerians have been killed in various kinds of attacks, including robberies and mob violence, leading to repeated diplomatic protests by Nigeria.

The consulate extended condolences to Simon's family, wished Chuks a full recovery and urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant while authorities pursue justice.
