Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has presented staff of office and official vehicles to 19 traditional rulers in the state.
The ceremony, held at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau, the state capital, involved 11 first-class emirs and eight second-class emirs who had taken their oaths of office.
The governor also presented each emir with three vehicles: a GAC Ultra SUV, a Mikano ZNA Hilux and an EV Antique Model car.
In a statement issued Saturday by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Lawal said the ceremony showed his administration’s recognition of traditional rulers as important partners in promoting peace, stability and development.
“The staff of office being presented today signifies the authority entrusted to you by the state,” the governor said.
“It also represents a responsibility to govern your respective domains with fairness, wisdom, integrity and compassion.”
Lawal urged the emirs to avoid discrimination, uphold justice and ensure their palaces remained accessible to all members of their communities.
He said the vehicles were provided to make travelling easier, encourage closer contact with residents and improve communication with government institutions.
“I expect these vehicles to be properly maintained and used responsibly in support of your official duties,” he said.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the remaining royal palaces.
Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, urged the newly installed emirs to remain loyal to the authorities and protect the dignity of the traditional institution.
He also encouraged them to carry out their responsibilities with respect for the institution they represent.
